Wichita Area Technical College (WATC) hosted Wichita’s inaugural participation in National Manufacturing Day on October 4, 2013. The event brought more than 200 students and educators from Wichita Public Schools for a day of hands-on participation and exploration at WATC’s main campus, the National Center for Aviation Training (NCAT).  Manufacturing Day seeks to addresses common misperceptions about manufacturing by giving manufacturers and educators an opportunity to open their doors and show, in a coordinated effort, what manufacturing is — and what it isn’t. Two Alpena High School teachers recently attended a conference at Michigan Technological University in Houghton-Hancock to learn how to build a 3D printer. The teachers have brought back the printer they constructed, along with a wealth of knowledge and ideas to further educate their students on the possibilities available in the 3D printing world. - Read More . . . .

With an emphasis on developing verbal and analytical skills, the new Common Core standards will pose a big step up for most students.  Effective teachers have always taught students how to analyze, critique and debate through group and solitary work, writing and oral presentations. The difference is that Common Core has made as guiding principles the ability to “comprehend and evaluate complex tasks” and “construct effective arguments” across subjects and disciplines. A recent report shows that although project-based learning is a growing trend in education, only about 1% of schools nationwide use the practice on a regular, committed basis. Educators say training and collaboration are key to rolling out the initiative, but it's also important to believe in students to find answers in their own ways. "If that trust is not present, then the teachers will be tempted to give students answers, resort to teaching lectures that are textbook dependent," said Sue Ramlo, a physics and education professor at the University of Akron in Ohio.  READ MORE . . .

A review of student engagement should focus on emotion and cognition, as well as student behavior, according to the coauthors of a new research paper. Researchers Jacquelynne S. Eccles, of the University of Michigan, and Ming-Te Wang, of the University of Pittsburgh, found that students were more emotionally and cognitively engaged if they believed lessons were meaningful in their lives. "Enhancing student engagement has been identified as the key to addressing problems of low achievement, high levels of student misbehavior, alienation, and high dropout rates," Wang said. RPOS teachers flying their quad-copter dronesThe RPOS schools and colleges are all about pushing the limits of traditional Manufacturing education in the classroom and in the lab, but when business, post-secondary and high school teachers team up, you never know what will happen.  June 3rd – 5th, a number of RPOS manufacturing teachers traveled to Butler Community College, in Andover, KS, to attend their summer Manufacturing Workshop, led by Buford Pringle, to learn about “Drones” and possible project/lesson opportunities in their own classroom.

With the market growth in drone technologies and the past history of aerospace industry in the Wichita, KS area, this is a high demand occupation for high school students and college graduates, but the technical training and skills are not currently available at those levels.  To help prepare students for the workforce, business and industry are teaming up with regional colleges to identify areas and sectors that students need to be prepared in and providing input on core curriculum.  Through this collaboration, Butler Community College has begun work on a variety of drone projects and lessons that can be implemented into their manufacturing and engineering classes, as well as some that can be implemented at the high school level.

Students need to learn how to digest what they read rather than simply scan text for the answer to a question, science educator Fred Ende writes in this blog post. Ende notes many exams seek responses that allow students to "scavenge" texts, and he proposes three ideas -- including rewording questions -- to help teachers ensure students gain a deeper understanding of reading material.
