Last post I mentioned the Geometry in Construction group from Loveland, CO and how they closely mirror many of the things that are done in Manufacturing and other pathways.  This time I would like continue with some of their resourcse available on the Conceptual Learning Concepts web site.  Under their "Downloads" section you will find a number of resources that might give you a inside look at how blending academics with CTE can be done and not spend all year trying to do it.

Geometry in Construction: 

This last week I attended the National Career Pathway Network (NCPN) conference in Richmond, VA and left energized about blending CTE and Academics in the classroom.  While this has always been something that has been highlighted by the 10 frameworks in the RPOS grant, it is a challenge that we are really just starting to tackle.  Kansas has had a long history with Math-in-CTE from the NCRCTE, but it really never lit the fire in CTE teachers.

A semi-recently formed group in Loveland,CO high school, who started with the same concept, but tackled just geometry and construction are making huge waves in the CTE world with their success of putting application in the math classroom and matching concepts/vocabulary.  A true blending of not only content and lessons, but also classrooms have lead to overwhelming success in student knowledge and understanding.  This has lead to a greater value...

The National Career Pathways Network (NCPN) conference (Oct 17-19 Richmond, VA) has never been more relevant. Increasing numbers of people, institutions, and agencies are recognizing that Career Pathways is what this country needs to bring relevancy to education and increased skills to the workplace. This will lead to more qualified graduates and increased economic prosperity for all.

The annual NCPN conference brings together practitioners from secondary, postsecondary, and business to network, listen, and learn from each other. They include those who work with traditional students and those who focus on adult education learners. The presenters at this conference have great experiences to share, but those presenters are also here to learn from you and the many others who come together.

Improving academic skills to meet the demands of a complex, technology-based economy. CTE has the unique capacity to make college-preparatory academics available to students who have not experienced academic success by embedding and teaching rigorous academic content in the context of real-world problems, projects and activities. This can be done through programs of study (also called career pathways) that enable academic and CTE teachers to work together to help more students acquire and apply complex knowledge in mastering a multitude of real-world skills.

Increasing the nation's supply of highly qualified workers by connecting high school programs of study with postsecondary programs and students' career goals. The Common Career Technical Core (CCTC) is a state-led initiative to establish a set of rigorous, high-quality standards for Career Technical Education (CTE) that states can adopt voluntarily. The standards have been informed by state and industry standards and developed by a diverse group of teachers, business and industry experts, administrators and researchers.

The initiative is being coordinated by the National Association of State Directors of Career Technical Education Consortium (NASDCTEc), which represents the state and territory heads of secondary, postsecondary and adult CTE across the nation. Forty-two states the District of Columbia and Palau participated in the development stage of the CCTC.

The development of the CCTC was a multi-step process that incorporated input from approximately 3,500 individuals representing K-12 education, business and industry and higher education from across the nation.

In this article by Robert Rothman in the Harvard Education Letter, he discusses how the Common Core will be change classroom practice in our public schools.  It is natural to assume that what affects the academic classes will also affect the Career and Technical Education (CTE) classes.  While the academic teachers do a good job of teaching concepts and building foundations, it is generally the CTE teacher that provides application and real-world situations that students can use the knowledge and build retention.  CTE is an essential part of every school and can't be left out of this new era we are moving into.
